LA Weekly – REVIEW “Voyage d’Amour”
All-girl sketch comedy troupe Tomboys in Fishnets’ latest outing begins with an amusing concept: A spaceship from the future scours the galaxy in search of something called “Love.†Unfortunately, the gender-bent Star Trek riff, which is revisited in other skits, doesn’t quite work as a framing device for the rest of the material. Most of the 18 skits open with attention-grabbing concepts. Penned primarily by Edie Magoun, the sketches look at romantic delusions from appealingly offbeat perspectives. (Fellow Tomboy Laura Hermanstorfer contributed on several sketches.) Magoun’s “Crazy Girls,†which takes place in a stripper club where the gals really are insane, is the most hilarious bit of the evening. With no skit longer than a few minutes, Magoun’s staging is fast-paced, and the high-energy Tomboys (JoAnna Senatore, Nakia Syvonne, Phalana Tiller and Magoun, with Hope Taylor and Elena Almas substituting for, respectively, Avery Clyde and Hermanstorfer) make the most of the material.
