LA Weekly RECOMMENDED “Hollywood”

Picture 2

Review of our 2nd Stage Production “Hollywood”

TOMBOYS IN FISHNETS Creator-director Edie Magoun’s all-female comedy troupe excels at skewering male stereotypes without leaving a bitter feminist aftertaste. A “six-pack”of ballsy chicks whips through scores of costume and wig changes during 20 rapid-fire sketches that clock in at less than an hour. The Tomboys in Fishnets flaunt their girl power in the opening go-go dance number to the Guess Who’s fuzz-guitar-propelled “American Woman,” setting a deliciously wicked tone for take-no-prisoners comedy that’s so funny it hurts. Everyone and everything are game, especially Hollywood: Orphaned triplets audition for a celebrity couple seeking to adopt, a bag lady makes lunch dates on a cell phone, a Valley hard-rock poseur gets hair extensions from a trendy stylist who caters to Sunset Strip metal bands, nosy suburban neighbors barge in on a pervert screwing a Godzilla blow-up doll, and so on. The badass pop soundtrack, which includes Magoun and Hermanstorfer’s original “The Boobies Song,” more than makes up for Terri Murphy and Magoun’s nonexistent lighting and the uncredited set design. Zephyr Theater, 7456 Melrose Ave., W. Hlywd.; Wed., 8:30 p.m.; thru Sept 4. (888) 208-9868. (Miriam Jacobson)
